Rosa


Today's WOTD is: "rosa" = rose

In Spanish, the noun "rosa" is a feminine noun of Latin origin the main meaning of which is rose.

In Spanish, the word “rosa” can also be a masculine* noun which means the colour pink.

*NB Please note that when meaning the colour pink, “rosa” is a masculine noun, that is “el rosa

A related word to “rosa” is “rosal”, which means the rosebush.

Some commonly used expressions containing the words "rosa" are:
  • Como las propias rosas (very well/ perfectly);
  • Como una rosa (very well/ perfectly);
  • Fresco como una rosa (fresh as a daisy - masculine);
  • Fresca como una rosa (fresh as a daisy - feminine);
  • No hay rosa sin espinas (no rose without thorns/ there is a downside to everything - figurative);
  • Novela rosa (romance novel);
  • Palo de la rosa (rosewood);

  • Rosa claro (pale pink – colour);
  • Rosa de los vientos (compass card/ rose);
  • Rosa fuerte (bright pink – colour);

  • Salsa rosa (Thousand Island dressing);
  • Un vestido* (de color) rosa (a pink dress);
  • Verlo todo de color de rosa (to see things through rose-tinted/ rose colored glasses);

NB The expression is also valid for other garments, e.g.: “camisa”/ shirt.

  • Pedro llegó fresco como una rosa (Pedro arrived fresh as a daisy);

  • Esa es una novela rosa (that is a romance novel);
  • Esa mesa es de palo de la rosa (that is a rosewood table);
  • Esa mesa es de palo de rosa (that is a rosewood table);
  • Esa blusa de color rosa claro te queda muy bien (you suit that pale pink blouse);
  • Esa blusa de color rosa pálido te queda muy bien (you suit that pale pink blouse);
  • Esa blusa de color rosa fuerte te queda muy bien (you suit that bright pink blouse);
  • La flor de lis suele representar el Norte en la rosa de los vientos (the fleur-de-lis often represents the north on a compass card);
  • La flor de lis suele representar el Norte en la rosa náutica (the fleur-de-lis often represents the north on a compass card);
  • Las gambas con salsa rosa están muy ricas (prawns with Thousand Island dressing are very nice);
  • Pedro lo ve todo de color de rosa (Pedro sees everything through rose-tinted/ rose colored glasses);
