How Do You Like Travelling?

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a colleague. Maybe you are talking about holidays/ travel. At some point, the other person says to you something like: "how do you like travelling?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:

¿Cómo te gusta viajar?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:

¿Cómo le gusta (a usted) viajar?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to talk about your travel preferences. When talking about your travel preferences, you DO NOT need to be concerned about the level of formality in the other person's question. Your main concern should be about communicating how you like to travel. Perhaps what you want to say is that you:

• Like travelling by certain means of transport;
• Dislike travelling by certain means of transport;
• Like travelling at certain times of the year;
• Dislike travelling at certain times of the year;
• Like travelling round some place;
• Dislike travelling round some place;
• Like travelling in certain weather conditions;
• Dislike travelling in certain weather conditions;

Here are some examples of how you could reply:

• Me gusta viajar en tren (I like travelling by train);
• No me gusta viajar en avión (I don't like travelling by plain);
• Me gusta viajar en verano (I like travelling in the summer);
• No me gusta viajar en invierno (I don't like travelling in the winter);
• Me gusta viajar por España (I like travelling round Spain);
• No me gusta viajar por el Cantábrico (I don't like travelling in the bay of Biscay);
• Me gusta viajar cuando no hace frío (I like travelling when it is not cold);
• No me gusta viajar cuando hace mucho calor (I don't like travelling when it is too hot);

Now you should practice answering the question:

¿Cómo te gusta viajar?
