In Whose Name, Please?

SCENARIO
Imagine you are talking to a hotel receptionist on the phone. After exchanging the customary pleasantries, you say that you have a reservation. The receptionist wants to know in whose name the reservation was made. He/ she says to you something like: "in whose name, please?"

In Spanish, the other person would more likely say:
¿A nombre de quién?


OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to state the name of the person in whose name the reservation was made. Whether the reservation is in your name or in someone else's name, the simple answer would be a person' name. However, you could easily be more informative with very little additional effort.



Assuming the reservation was made in the name of María Botero, you could reply:
  • A nombre de María Botero (in Maria Botero's name);
  • A nombre de doña Maria Botero (in Mrs. Maria Botero's name);
  • A nombre de la señora Botero (in Mrs. Botero's name);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿A nombre de quién?

What Colour Are The Slippers?

SCENARIO


Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You are talking about a new pair of slippers you have bought. At some point the other person says to you something like: "what colour are the slippers?"

In Spanish, the other person could say:
¿De qué color son las zapatillas?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say what colour your slippers are. Here are some examples of how you could reply:



  • Son negras (they are black);
  • Son blancas (they are white);
  • Son marrones (they are brown);
  • Son (de color) marrón claro (they are light brown);
  • Son (de color) marrón oscuro (they are dark brown);
  • Son azules (they are blue);
  • Son (de color) azul marino (they are navy blue);
  • Son grises (they are grey);
  • Son rojas (they are red);
  • Son verdes (they are green);
  • Son amarillas (they are yellow);

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You are talking about a new pair of trousers you have bought. At some point the other person says to you something like: "what colour are the trousers?"

In Spanish, the other person could say:
¿De qué color son los pantalones?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say what colour your trousers are. Here are some examples of how you could reply:



  • Son negros (they are black);
  • Son blancos (they are white);
  • Son marrones (they are brown);
  • Son (de color) marrón claro (they are light brown);
  • Son (de color) marrón oscuro (they are dark brown);
  • Son azules (they are blue);
  • Son (de color) azul marino (they are navy blue);
  • Son grises (they are grey);

What Colour Is The Coat?


SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You are talking about a new coat you have bought. At some point the other person says to you something like: "what colour is the coat?"
In Spanish, the other person could say:
¿De qué color es el abrigo?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say what colour your coat is. Here are some examples of how you could reply:



  • Es negro (it is black);
  • Es blanco (it is white);
  • Es marrón (it is brown);
  • Es marrón claro (it is light brown);
  • Es marrón oscuro (it is dark brown);
  • Es azul (it is blue);
  • Es azul marino (it is navy blue);
  • Es gris (it is grey);
  • Es rojo (it is red);
  • Es verde (it is green);
  • Es amarillo (it is yellow);

Where Are Your Friends From?

SCENARIO
Imagine you and two or more friends* are talking to someone else who doesn't know your friends. At some point the other person asks you: "where are your friends from?".

*NB This scenario is only valid if all the friends in the group are female. This scenario is not valid if any of the friends in the group is a male (see post dealing with the case of one or more of your friends being male).

He/ she could choose to be less formal and ask you:
¿De dónde son tus amigas?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be a little bit more formal and say:
¿De dónde son sus amigas?

OUR TIP
This is a straightforward question about your friend (a third person). When saying something about a third person (that is, neither you nor the person asking the question) you DO NOT need be concerned about the degree of formality in the original question. You can just concentrate on answering the question.

Questions like this one are usually answered by indicating:
  • The nationality of the friends
  • The country your friends come from
  • The city/ town your friends come from

Assuming your friends are English, from London, you could say:
  • Mis amigas* son inglesas (my friends are English).
  • Mis amigas* son de Inglaterra (my friends are from England).
  • Mis amigas* son de Londres (my friends are from London).
  • Mis amigas* son inglesas, de Londres (my friends are English, they are from London).

*NB Here you choose the word “amigas” because all your friends are female. You would use the word “amigos” if one or more of your friends were male. Usually, the word used in the question should be the correct choice.

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿De dónde son tus amigas?

Where Are Your Friends From?

SCENARIO
Imagine you and two or more friends* are talking to someone else who doesn't know your friends. At some point the other person ask you: "where are your friends from?".

*NB This scenario is only valid if any friend in the group is a male. This scenario is not valid if the friends in the group are all female (see post dealing with the all female case).

He/ she could choose to be less formal and ask you:
¿De dónde son tus amigos?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be a little bit more formal and say:
¿De dónde son sus amigos?

OUR TIP
This is a straightforward question about your friend (a third person).
