At What Time Do You Leave New York?

Introduction

This post deals with time in general, and more specifically with the time, at which you are due to depart from somewhere.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or colleague about the return leg of a trip you are making to New York. The other person doesn't know at what time you are due to leave and says to you: "at what time do you leave New York?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:

¿A qué hora sales de Nueva York?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:

¿A qué hora sale (usted) de Nueva York?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to state the time of your departure from New York. Your reply should depend only on whether you:

Know at what time you are due to depart
Don't know when you will depart

Here are a couple of examples of how you could reply:

Salgo a la una y veinticinco (I leave at 1:25)
No sé a qué hora salgo (I don't know when I leave)

In Spanish, the other person could say:

¿A qué hora cierran los bancos?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to state the time at which the banks close for business. Your answer will depend on whether or not you know the closing time for the banks. Perhaps you want to state:

Banks closing times
A specific bank's closing hours
That you don't know at what time banks close
