How Many Holidays Do You Get Per Year?

SCENARIO
Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a colleague. Maybe you are talking about work/ working conditions/ holiday entitlement. At some point, the other person says to you something like: "how many holidays do you get per year?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Cuántos días de vacaciones tienes al año?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Cuántos días de vacaciones tiene (usted) al año?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to state the number of days you are entitled to as holidays in a year. When stating what your holiday entitlement is, you DO NOT need to be concerned about the level of formality in the other person's question. Your main concern should be about communicating your holiday entitlement. Perhaps what you want to say is that you are entitled to:
  • A specific/ fixed number of days;
  • A specific/ fixed number of weeks;
  • A specific/ fixed number of months;

Here are some examples of how you could reply:
  • Tengo veintiocho días de vacaciones al año (I get 28 days holidays per year);
  • Tengo cuatro semanas de vacaciones al año (I get 4 weeks holidays per year);
  • Tengo un mes de vacaciones al año (I get 1 month holiday per year);
  • Tengo veinticinco días de vacaciones más festivos (I have 25 days plus bank holidays);

Now you should practice answering the question:
¿Cuántos días de vacaciones tienes al año?
