Were There Any Restaurants Left Open?

SCENARIO
Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You are talking about a past event/ activity. The event/ activity in question relates to a late night meal you had in town. The other person seems surprised that you were able to eat out at such a late hour and says to you something like: "were there any restaurants left open?"

In Spanish, the other person could say:
¿Quedaban restaurantes abiertos?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say whether or not there were any restaurants still open. Here are some examples of how you could reply:

  • Sí, quedaban muchos restaurantes abiertos (yes, there were restaurants still open);
  • Sí, todavía quedaban muchos restaurantes abiertos (yes, there were many restaurants still open);
  • Sí, quedaban algunos restaurantes abiertos (yes, there were some restaurants still open);
  • Sí, quedaban muy pocos restaurantes abiertos (yes, there were very few restaurants still open);
  • No, no quedaban restaurantes abiertos (no, there were no restaurants still open);
  • No, ya no quedaban restaurantes abiertos (no, there were no restaurants still open/ all restaurants were already closed);
  • No, no quedaba ningún restaurante abierto (no, there were no restaurants still open);
  • No sé si quedaban restaurantes abiertos (I don't know if there were any restaurants still open);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Quedaban restaurantes abiertos?
