What Are You Going To Buy In The Fishmonger's?

Introduction

This post deals with shopping in general, and with things you may want to buy in a fishmonger's in particular.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or colleague. You are about to go shopping. and are making a shopping list. The other person says to you: "what are you going to buy in the fishmonger's?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Qué vas a comprar en la pescadería?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Qué va a comprar (usted) en la pescadería?

OUR TIP

Answering is quite straightforward. Naming something you can buy in the fishmonger's should be sufficient. You may also want to indicate the quantity/ amount of what you intend buying.

Here are some examples of what you could buy in the fishmongers:
  • Un kilo de sardinas (a kilo of sardines);
  • Doscientos gramos de salmón ahumado (200 grammes of smoked salmon);
  • Medio kilo de caballa (half a kilo of mackerel);
  • Medio kilo de bacalao (half a kilo of cod);
  • Un cuarto de kilo de atún (a quarter of a kilo of tuna);
  • Un cuarto de kilo de calamar (a quarter of a kilo of sliced squid);
  • Medio kilo de mejillones (half a kilo of mussels);
  • Una docena de langostinos (a dozen king prawns);
  • Unas truchas (some trout);
  • Un kilo de besugo (a kilo of sea bream);
  • Un kilo de lubina (a kilo of sea bass);
  • Medio kilo de rape (half a kilo of monkfish);
  • Medio kilo de berberechos (half a kilo of cockles);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Qué vas a comprar en la pescadería?
