At What Time Do Chemists Open?

Introduction

This post deals with hours of business in general, and more specifically with the opening times, for example, the opening times of chemists.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are with a relative, a friend or colleague. The other person wants to know when chemists open to the public and says to you: "at what time do chemists open?"

In Spanish, the other person could say:
¿A qué hora abren las farmacias?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to state the time when the chemists open for business. Your answer will depend on whether or not you know the opening time for the chemists. Perhaps you want to state:

  • The chemists opening times
  • A specific chemist's opening hours
  • You don't know at what time the chemists open

Here are some examples of how you could reply:

  • Abren a las nueve (they open at 9:00)
  • Los lunes abren a las nueve (on Mondays, they open at 9:00)
  • De lunes a viernes, abren a las nueve (Monday to Friday, they open at 9:00)
  • La farmacia de la esquina abre a las nueve (the chemist on the corner opens at 9:00)
  • No sé a qué hora abren (I don't know at what time they open)

*Notes

Please note the difference between the expressions of time used in these answers and typical expressions used in telling the time, such as:
  • Es la una y media (it is half past one)
  • No sé qué hora es (I don't know what time it is)

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿A qué hora abren las farmacias?
