Asa

Today's WOTD is: "asa" = handle


In Spanish, “asa” is a feminine* noun of Latin origin, the main meaning of which is handle, as in:
  • Las asas de esa cazuela son muy pequeñas (the handles on that cooking pot are very small);


The related noun “asidero” means a handle or similar fixture, as in:
  • Los servicios disponen de asideros de baño (the toilets are fitted with bathroom grab bars);
  • Los servicios disponen de asideros de pared (the toilets are fitted with wall grab bars);

* Grammar
Please note that we say “el asa” and not “la asa”.
The noun “asa” is an example of a number of Spanish nouns which, despite being feminine, are preceded by the masculine definite article “el”. Please note: the plural form reverts to the normal, "las asas").
