Do You Have A Headache?

Introduction

This post deals with a typical use of the verb tener*.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are in the doctor's surgery. Whilst examining you, the doctor says: "do you have a headache?"

In Spanish, the doctor could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Tienes dolor de cabeza?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Tiene (usted) dolor de cabeza?

OUR TIP

A straightforward yes/ no answer could be sufficient. But if you wanted to be more informative you could say:

  • Sí, tengo dolor de cabeza (yes, I have a headache);
  • Sí, tengo un poco de dolor de cabeza (yes, I have a little bit of a headache);
  • Sí, tengo un dolor de cabeza muy fuerte (yes, I have a strong headache);
  • No, no tengo dolor de cabeza (no, I don't have a headache);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Tienes dolor de cabeza?
