Do You Feel Hot?

Introduction

This post showcases/ highlights a typical use of the verb tener*.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend, a work colleague. It is quite a warm day and the other person says: "do you feel hot?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Tienes calor?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Tiene usted calor?

OUR TIP

A straightforward yes/ no answer could be sufficient. But if you wanted to be a bit more informative you could say:

  • Sí, tengo calor (yes, I feel hot);
  • Sí, tengo un poco de calor (yes, I feel a little hot);
  • Sí, tengo bastante calor (yes, I feel quite hot);
  • Sí, tengo mucho calor (yes, I feel very hot);
  • No, no tengo calor (no, I don't feel hot);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Tienes calor?
