Were You Wanting To Listen To The Radio?

SCENARIO
Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or a work colleague. Maybe you are unsure about what each one of you wants to do and are putting forward ideas. At some point the other person says to you something like: "were you wanting to listen to the radio?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Querías escuchar la radio?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Quería (usted) escuchar la radio?

OUR TIP
The question is an invitation for you to say what you want to do. When saying what you want to do, you should not need to be concerned about the level of formality in the original question. Your main concern should be about saying what you wanted to do.

Here are some examples of how you could reply:
  • Sí, quería escuchar la radio (yes, I wanted to listen to the radio);
  • Sí, quería escuchar las noticias (yes, I wanted to listen to the news);
  • No, no quería escuchar la radio, quería ver a tele (no, I didn't want to listen to the radio, I wanted to watch TV);
  • No, no quería escuchar la radio, quería leer el periódico (no, I didn't want to listen to the radio, I wanted to read the newspaper);
  • No, no quería escuchar la radio, quería hacer los deberes de español (no, I didn't want to listen to the radio, I wanted to do my Spanish homework);

Now you should practise answering the question:
¿Querías escuchar la radio?
