Imagine
you are talking to
a relative, a friend or a work colleague. You have had a full
lunch,and the time comes when in Spain a little catnap is quite
common. You are not known for sleeping in the afternoon, so when it
transpires that you might be wanting to do so this time, the other
person
says to you something like: "were
you wanting
to have an afternoon nap?"
In
Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Querías
echar una siesta?
Alternatively,
he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Quería
(usted) echar una siesta?
The
question is an invitation for you to say what you want to do. When
saying what you want to do, you should not need to be
concerned about the level of formality in the original question. Your
main concern should be about saying what you wanted to do.
Here
are some examples of how you could reply:
- Sí, quería echar una siesta (yes, I wanted to have an afternoon nap);
- Sí, quería descansar un poco (yes, I wanted to have a little rest);
- No, no quería echar una siesta, quería escuchar la radio (no, I didn't want to have an afternoon nap, I wanted to listen to the radio);
- No, no quería echar una siesta, quería ver la tele (no, I didn't want to have an afternoon nap, I wanted to watch TV);
- No, no quería echar una siesta, quería tomar un café (no, I didn't want to have an afternoon nap, I wanted to have a coffee);
Now
you should practise answering the question:
¿Querías
echar una siesta?
