Imagine
you are visiting
a relative or a friend with whom you are spending a few days. After a
busy day out you return home quite tired and would not mind taking to
a relaxing bath. On realising that to be the case, the other person
says to you something like: "were
you wanting
to have a bath?"
In
Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Querías
tomar un baño?
Alternatively,
he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Quería
(usted) tomar un baño?
The
question is an invitation for you to say what you want to do. When
saying what you want to do, you should not need to be
concerned about the level of formality in the original question. Your
main concern should be about saying what you wanted to do.
Here
are some examples of how you could reply:
- Sí, quería tomar un baño refrescante (yes, I wanted to have a refreshing bath);
- Sí, quería tomar un baño para relajarme un poco (yes, I wanted to take a bath to relax a little);
- Sí, quería tomar un baño o una ducha muy caliente (yes, I wanted to take a bath or a very hot shower);
- No, no quería tomar un baño, quería tomar una ducha fría (no, I didn't want to have an bath, I wanted to take a cold shower);
- No, no quería tomar un baño, quería descansar un poco primero (no, I didn't want to have bath, I would like to have a little rest first);
Now
you should practise answering the question:
¿Querías
tomar un baño?
