How Many Hours Do You Watch TV Per Day?

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking to a relative, a friend or colleague. Maybe you are talking about your daily habits. At some point, the other person says to you something like: "how many hours do you watch TV per day?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to be less formal and say:

¿Cuantas horas de tele ves al día?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be more formal and say:

¿Cuantas horas de tele ve (usted) al día?

The question is an invitation for you to state the number of hours you watch TV per day. When you state the number of hours you watch TV per day, you DO NOT need to be concerned about the level of formality in the other person's question. Your main concern should be about saying how much TV you watch. Perhaps what you want to say is that you watch TV:

• An unspecified amount time;
• An approximate amount of time;
• An approximate amount of time on specific days;
• An approximate amount of time on specific blocks of days;
• Other answers;

Here are some examples of how you could reply, which deal with a variety of possible situations:

• Veo la tele varias horas al día (I watch TV several hours per day);
• Veo la tele unas tres horas al día (I watch TV some three hours per day);
• Los lunes veo unas dos horas de tele (on Mondays I watch some two hours of TV);
• Los viernes veo más de tres horas de tele (on Fridays I watch over three hours of TV);
• De lunes a jueves veo menos de dos horas de tele al día (Monday to Thursday I watch less than two hours of TV per day);
• Los domingos veo mucho la tele (on Sundays I watch a lot of TV);
