Los Reyes Magos
Cuenta
Eran
reyes, sabios o incluso simplemente magos.

genial!
¡Feliz
Día de Reyes!
The Magi
Legend has it they
knew about the birth of Jesus. Their ancient books had forecast the
wondrous event. They were kings, wise men, simply sorcerers even.
They were masters of astrology and could read what the future was
about to bring. Thus when the foretold sign appeared in the sky, they
didn't hesitate to follow it. It was written. They knew that star
would show them the way. Destiny was awaiting. They would witness an
Epiphany and pay homage to the new born king.
Thus the Magi
or Wise Men adoration took place. They had come on
their camels, with a very small entourage and bearing gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh. Setting of from a vague 'the
Orient', they put their faith on a new star appearing in the sky and
in the main, that star didn't fail them. Not much is known about
their journey, how long it took them to get there or what
difficulties they found in their way. They are reported to have made
their way to Bethlehem after a stop over in Jerusalem, where
they met Herod the Great. However, this meeting with Herod, the Roman
client king of Judea was a mere stage on their true destination, the
adoration.
The story is a pretty
simple one, really. Learned people may now disagree about some of the
finer points, for example, whether there were only three Magi
or whether there were more... However, to a small child sitting on
grandfather's knee by a fire on cold winter's day, the story of the
Magi was the stuff dreams are made of. The Magi,
Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar repeat that magic
journey every year to bring presents to each child. It was then no
surprise that the finer points of the story might be forgotten, but
the annual visit of the Magi, along with their names remain
fixed firmly in memory.
The Magi arrive
during the night of the 5th to the 6th of
January. Children should have written a letter in advance to the
“Reyes Magos” and, of course, go to
bed in in good time on the evening of the 5th. However,
children do not go to bed before the end of the “Cabalgata
de Reyes”, which parades the streets.
The “Cabalgatas de Reyes”
are also broadcast usually live on TV! It is then a matter of just
having a good sleep for the magic of the “Reyes
Magos” to do the trick and wake up to a wonderful
“Día de Reyes” full of
presents.
Once
upon a time, not so long ago that was the story of the Magi
in some parts of the world. Where in those days, Father
Christmas/ Santa Claus was still beginning to
preach his own gospel of commercialisation. However, globalisation,
mass media and social networks are constantly opening new doors to a
brave new world. Things are changing... so if you still celebrate it,
have great time, enjoy!
Happy 'Día de Reyes'!
