Introduction
This
post is about weights in
general, and fractions of a kilo in particular.
SCENARIO
Imagine you are at
your local grocers shop. You are working your way through a shopping
list which includes some cheese.
On
hearing that you want some cheese, the grocer says to you:
how much cheese do you want?
In
Spanish, the grocer could choose to be less formal and say:
¿Cuánto
queso quieres?
In
Spanish, the grocer could choose to be more formal and say:
¿Cuánto
queso quiere?
OUR
TIP
Answering
the question should be quite straightforward. You may need to be
careful with the units of weights to make sure that you get the correct amount
of cheese. The notes below* should help you make sure of that.
With
that in mind, you could say:
- Quería doscientos gramos de queso (I want 200 grams of cheese)
- Quería doscientos cincuenta gramos de queso (I want 250 grams of cheese)
- Quería un cuarto de kilo de queso (I want a quarter of a kilo of cheese)
- Quería quinientos gramos de queso (I want 500 grams of cheese)
- Quería medio de kilo de queso (I want half a kilo of cheese)
- Quería un kilo de queso (I want a kilo of cheese)
Now
you should practise answering the question:
¿Cuánto
queso quieres?
