Guía

Today's WOTD is: "guía" = guide
In Spanish, “guía” is a feminine noun of uncertain origin, which means guide*, as in:
  • Ese periódico publica una buena guía de espectáculos (that newspaper publishes a very good theatre guide/ entertainment page);



*NB When referring to a person “guía” is also masculine, as in:
  • Pedro es muy buen guía turístico (Pedro is a very good tourist guide)


The related action word/ verb “guiar” means to guide or to lead, as in:
  • El mapa nos guió hasta aquí (the map led us/ guided us here);


A couple of Spanish expressions with the word “guía” are:
  • Guía de calles (street guide/ map);
  • Guía de espectáculos (theatre/ entertainment guide);
  • Guía telefónica (telephone directory);
