Is The Railway Station Far Away

Introduction

This post deals with indicating how near/ far the railway station is in Spanish, and the distance from where you are to the railway station.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are with a relative, a friend, a work colleague or even a complete stranger who is looking for the railway station and asks you: "is the railway station far away?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to say:

¿Queda lejos la estación?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to say how far away the railway station is. A yes/no answer may be strictly sufficient. However, with little effort, your answer could be a lot more informative.

Here are some examples of how you could reply:

La estación queda lejos (the railway station is far away)
La estación queda bastante lejos (the railway station is quite far away)
La estación queda muy lejos (the railway station is very far away)
La estación queda cerca (the railway station is near)
La estación queda bastante cerca (the railway station is quite near)
La estación queda muy cerca (the railway station is very near)
La estación queda a la vuelta de la esquina (the railway station is around the corner)
La estación queda al final de la calle a la izquierda (the railway station is at the end of the street/ road on the left)
La estación queda a dos manzanas (the railway station is two blocks away)
La estación queda a dos cuadras (the railway station is two blocks away)
La estación queda a cinco minutos a pie (the railway station is five minutes away on foot)
La estación queda en el centro (the railway station is the town centre/ downtown)
La estación no queda lejos (the railway station is not far away)
La estación queda a doscientos metros^* (the railway station is 200 meters away)
La estación queda a trescientos metros^* (the railway station is 300 meters away)
La estación queda a dos kilómetros^* (the railway station is 2 kilometres away)
