Is The Church Far Away?

Introduction

This post deals with indicating how near/ far the church is in Spanish, and the distance from where you are to the church.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are with a relative, a friend, a work colleague or even a complete stranger who is looking for a church and asks you:"is the church far away?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to say:

¿Queda lejos la iglesia?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to say how far away the church is. A yes/no answer may be strictly sufficient. However, with little effort, your answer could be a lot more informative.

Here are some examples of how you could reply:

La iglesia queda lejos (the church is far away)
La iglesia queda bastante lejos (the church is quite far away)
La iglesia queda muy lejos (the church is very far away)
La iglesia queda cerca (the church is near)
La iglesia queda bastante cerca (the church is quite near)
La iglesia queda muy cerca (the church is very near)
La iglesia queda a la vuelta de la esquina (the church is around the corner)
La iglesia queda al final de la calle a la izquierda (the church is at the end of the street/ road on the left)
La iglesia queda a dos manzanas (the church is two blocks away)
La iglesia queda a dos cuadras (the church is two blocks away)
La iglesia queda a cinco minutos a pie (the church is five minutes away on foot)
La iglesia queda en el centro (the church is the town centre/ downtown)
La iglesia no queda lejos (the church is not far away)
La iglesia queda a doscientos metros^* (the church is 200 meters away)
La iglesia queda a trescientos metros^* (the church is 300 meters away)
La iglesia queda a dos kilómetros^* (the church is 2 kilometres away)
