Otro

The word of the day is: 'otro' = another (singular) other (plural).

The describing word/ adjective  'otro'/ 'otra' may be used to describe someone or something as not the one being talked about. The adjective 'otro' is also used to indicate similarity between different things (see examples below).


In Spanish,  'otro'/ 'otra' are also used pre-ceded by 'el'/ 'la' to indicate a 'not to farr away' past in expressions such as:
  • El otro día (the other day)
  • La otra tarde (the other afternoon/ evening)
  • La otra noche (the other evening/ night)


In Spanish, 'otro'/ 'otra' are also used in the following common expressions:
  • Al otro día (the day after/ the following day)
  • Cosa del otro jueves (extraordinary event/ something which happened a long time ago)
  • El otro barrio/ el otro mundo/ la otra vida (the afterlife/ eternity)
  • La acera de enfrente (oposition group or party)
  • ¡Otra! ¡Otra! ('encore'!)
  • Otra vez (once more)
  • Una y otra vez (time and again)
  • En otro sitio (somewhere else)
  • En otro momento (some other time)
  • El otro yo (other self/ the alter ego)
  • Un día sí y otro no (every other day)
  • Un día sí y otro también (every day)
  • De un día para otro (from one day to the next)
  • Los otros (the others)

Examples of usage of 'otro'/ 'otra' are:
  • Prefiero el otro libro (I prefer the other book)
  • Peter es otro Rafa Nadal (Peter is a good tenis player)
  • Hablé con Mónica el otro día (I spoke to Mónica the other day-past)
  • Al otro día fuimos al cine (the following day we went to the cinema)
  • No quisiera equivocarme otra vez (I would not want to get it wrong again)
  • Quizás podamos hablar en otro momento (maybe we could talk another time)
  • Una y otra vez volvemos a lo mismo (time and again, we repeat the same thing)
