Arrasar

The word of the day is: 'arrasar'= to devastate/ to destroy.

The verb  'arrasar' is used describe an action of destroying, for example when floods destroy buildings or crops. The verb 'arrasar' is also (and perhaps more frequently) used to mean sweeping to victory/ crushing the opposition (sports/ elections) or winning universal acclamation/ sweeping the board (artists/ entertainers).

  Examples of usage are:

  • El fuego arrasó el bosque (fire destroyed/ debastated the forest)
  • Tu equipo volvió a arrasar (your team swept to victory once more)
  • Creo que ese partido va a arrasar en las elecciones (I believe that party is going to win a crushing victory at the elections)
  • Lady Gaga arrasa en los premios MTV  (Lady Gaga sweeps the board at the MTV)
