Barrio

Today's WOTD is: "barrio" = neighbourhood

In Spanish, “barrio” is a masculine noun of Arabic origin, the main meaning of which is neighbourhood, or district, as in:
  • Vivimos en un barrio muy tranquilo (we live in a very quiet neighbourhood/ district);



Some Spanish expressions with the word “barrio” are:
  • Barrio Sésamo (the Spanish Sesame Street);
  • De barrio (local);
    • Alcalde de barrio (local/ neighbourhood mayor);
    • Bar de barrio (local/ neighbourhood bar);
    • Cine de barrio (local/ neighbourhood cinema/ movie theatre);
    • Supermercado de barrio (local/ neighbourhood supermarket);
    • Tienda de barrio (local/ neighbourhood shop);
  • El otro barrio (the other side/ the great unknown/ the great beyond -death);
    • Irse al otro barrio (to die):
      • He estado a punto de irme al otro barrio (I have nearly died);
    • Mandar a alguien al otro barrio (to kill someone);
      • Por poco me mandan al otro barrio (they nearly killed me);
