Avenida

Today's WOTD is: "avenida" = avenue
In Spanish, “avenida” is a feminine noun of Latin origin, the main meaning of which is avenue, as in:
  • Vivimos en la Avenida de América (we live in the Avenue of the Americas);

The noun “avenida” also means a flood, as in:
  • Una gran avenida destruyó los puentes (a huge flood destroyed the bridges);


The word “avenida”/ “avenido”, is also a describing word/ adjective, usually preceded by “bien” or “mal” and meaning in agreement/ in harmony, as:
  • Somos un grupo de personas bien avenidas (we are a group of people who get on really well with each other);


Related to "avenida" is action word/ verb “avenirse”, meaning to accept or to agree, as in:
  • Me avengo a lo que el destino me depare (I accept what my fate may bring);


Some Spanish expressions with the word “avenida” are:
  • Avenida pluvial (flood of rain);
