Acceso

Today's WOTD is: "acceso" = access

1. In Spanish, “acceso”* is a masculine noun of Latin origin which means access, as in:


  • Prohibido el acceso al personal no autorizado (no access to unauthorised personnel);
  • Está cerrada la única via de acceso a la cumbre (the only summit access road is closed);
  • Esa información está clasificada, nosotros no tenemos acceso a ella (that information is classified, we don't have access to it);
*NB please note that the Spanish and English words have slightly different spellings.


2. In Spanish, the word “acceso” may also be used to refer to a fit, a bout or an attack, as in:
  • Cometió esa locura en un acceso de ira (he/ she did that crazy thing in a fit of rage);
  • Un acceso de tos me matuvo despierto casi toda la noche (a bout of coughing kept me awake almost all night);


3. Related Spanish words are “accesible”* and “inaccesible” which are describing words/ adjectives meaning accessible and inaccessible respectively.
  • Queremos un transporte público más accesible (we want a more accessible public transport);

    4. Some expressions with the word “acceso” are:
  • Acceso a la red (network access);
  • Acceso libre (free/ unrestricted access);
    • La piscina es de acceso libre (use of the swimming pool is free/ unrestricted);
  • Adaptación de acceso (access accommodation/ adaptation for accessibility);
    • Las rampas de acceso son ejemplos de adaptaciones de acceso (access ramps are examples of adaptations for accessibility);
  • Autorización de acceso (access authorisation);
  • Clave the acceso (access key/ user password);
  • Dar acceso a algo (to give access to something);
    • Nos han dado acceso a la sala vip (we have been given access to the VIP lounge);
  • De difícil acceso (hard to reach/ difficult to access);
    • Una cumbre de difícil acceso (a hard to reach summit);
  • Permitir el acceso (to grant/ allow access);
  • Portal de acceso (access portal/ web access portal);
  • Pruebas de acceso (admission tests/ exams);
  • Punto de acceso (access point);
  • Rampa de acceso (access ramp);
    • Las rampas de acceso son ejemplos de adaptaciones de acceso (access ramps are examples of adaptations for accessibility);
  • Restricción de acceso (access restriction/ limitation);
  • Restringir el acceso (to restrict/ limit access);
  • Tener acceso a algo (to have access to something);
    • Teemos acceso a la sala vip (we have access to the VIP lounge);
  • Zona de acceso (access area/ region)'
  • Zona de difícil acceso (hard to reach area/ region);
