Is The Hairdressers Near?

Introduction

This post deals with indicating how near/ far the hairdresser's is in Spanish, and the distance from where you are to the hairdresser's.

SCENARIO

Imagine you are with a relative, a friend, a work colleague or even a complete stranger who is looking for a hairdresser's and asks you: "is the hairdressers near?"

In Spanish, the other person could choose to say:
¿Queda cerca la peluquería?

OUR TIP

The question is an invitation for you to say how far away the hairdressers is. A yes/no answer may be strictly sufficient. However, with little effort, your answer could be a lot more informative.

Here are some examples of how you could reply:
  • La peluquería queda lejos (the hairdressers is far away)
  • La peluquería queda bastante lejos (the hairdressers is quite far away)
  • La peluquería queda muy lejos (the hairdressers is very far away)
  • La peluquería queda cerca (the hairdressers is near)
  • La peluquería queda bastante cerca (the hairdressers is quite near)
  • La peluquería queda muy cerca (the hairdressers is very near)
  • La peluquería queda a la vuelta de la esquina (the hairdressers is around the corner)
  • La peluquería queda al final de la calle (the hairdressers is at the end of the street/ road on the left)
  • La peluquería queda a dos manzanas (the hairdressers is two blocks away)
  • La peluquería queda a dos cuadras (the hairdressers is two blocks away)
  • La peluquería queda a cinco minutos a pie (the hairdressers is five minutes away on foot)
  • La peluquería queda en el centro (the hairdressers is in the town centre/ downtown)
  • La peluquería no queda cerca (the hairdressers is not near)
  • La peluquería queda a doscientos metros* (the hairdressers is 200 meters away)
  • La peluquería queda a trescientos metros* (the hairdressers is 300 meters away)

Now you should practise answering the question:

¿Queda cerca la peluquería?
