Nochebuena

Today's WOTD is: "Nochebuena" = Christmas Eve

1. In Spanish, “Nochebuena”* is a feminine noun of Latin origin commonly used to refer to Christmas Eve and the corresponding celebrations.
  • Como de costumbre, vamos a celebrar la Nochebuena en familia (as usual, we are going to celebrate Christmas Eve with the family);

*NB The noun “Nochebuena” is a composite/ compound word formed by joining together “noche” (night) and “buena” (good). In Spain, Latin America and the Philippines the “Nochebuena” celebration takes place on the night of the 24th of December. Although Nochebuena is Christian the celebration of the birth of Jesus, an important element of such celebrations is a traditional dinner at home with the family.

En Nochebuena”, la noche del 24 de diciembre, el mundo hispano recuerda el nacimiento de Jesús. La Nochebuena”, que en principio es una festividad de origen eminentemente religioso, es también una fiesta de carácter tradicionalmente familiar. Un elemento importante de la celebración de la Nochebuena” es la tradicional cena hogareña de la víspera del día de Navidad.
