Navidad

Today's WOTD is: "NavidadChristmas

1. In Spanish, “Navidad” is a feminine noun of Latin origin commonly used to refer to Christmas and the corresponding celebrations.
  • Como de costumbre, vamos a celebrar la Navidad en familia (as usual, we are going to celebrate Christmas with the family);


2. The plural form, “Navidades” is often used to refer to the Christmas period.
  • Vamos a pasar las Navidades en España (we are going to spend Christmas in Spain);


3. The plural form, “Navidades” is also often used to refer to people's ages.
  • Pedro tiene ya muchas navidades (Pedro is quite old);


4. Some expressions with the word “Navidad” are:
  • Árbol de Navidad (Christmas tree);
    • En casa tenemos un árbol de Navidad precioso (at home we have a lovely Christmas tree);
  • Bola de Navidad (Christmas ornament/ bauble);
    • Esas bolas de Navidad son muy bonitas (those baubles/ ornaments are very pretty);
  • Celebrar la Navidad (to celebrate Christmas);
    • Como de costumbre, vamos a celebrar la Navidad en familia (as usual, we are going to celebrate Christmas with the family);
  • Cena de Navidad (Christmas dinner);
    • Para la cena de Navidad se reúne toda la familia (the whole family gets together for the Christmas dinner);
  • Feliz Navidad (Merry Christmas/ Happy Christmas);
    • Feliz Navidad, amigos (Merry Christmas/ Happy Christmas, my friends);
  • Lotería de Navidad (Christmas lottery*);
    • En España, el sorteo de la lotería de Navidad se celebra el 22 de diciembre (In Spain, the Christmas lottery draw takes place on December the 22nd);
  • Vacaciones de Navidad (Christmas break/ holiday/ vacation);
    • Este año las vacaciones de Navidad empezaron el 21 de diciembre (this year the Christmas break/ holiday/ vacation started on December the 21st);
*NB A very popular lottery in Spain. The draw takes place on December the 22nd. The first price is a very large one -commonly known as “el gordo” -the fat/ big one.
