Dependiente

Today's WOTD is: "dependiente" = shop assistant

1. In Spanish, “dependiente” is a masculine noun of Latin origin commonly used to refer to a male* shop assistant/ store clerk/ salesperson.
  • Nos atendió un dependiente muy amable (we were attended to by a very kind male shop assistant/ store clerk/ sales person);
*NB The feminine form “dependienta” is normally used to refer to a female shop assistant/ store clerk/ salesperson.
  • Nos atendió una dependienta muy amable (we were attended to by a very kind female shop assistant/ store clerk/ sales person);

2. The Spanish word “dependiente” may also be describing word/ adjective* which means dependent.
  • Una variable dependiente (a dependent variable);
  • Un factor dependiente (a dependent factor);

3. The Spanish word “dependiente” is also often used to refer to people with special needs.
  • Un programa de apoyo a las personas dependientes (a support program for people with special needs);
  • Un programa de apoyo a los dependientes (a support program for people with special needs);

4. A couple of composite/ compound words with the word “dependiente” in them are:
  • Farmacodependiente (drug addict*);
    • El farmacodependiente es a veces un paciente adicto a su propio tratamiento (a drug addict is sometimes a patient with an addiction to his/ her treatment);
  • Drogodependiente (drug addict*);
