Why Not Go For A Drink?

SCENARIO

Imagine you are talking about leisure activities with a relative, a friend or a colleague.  Perhaps you are talking about what you could do this afternoon/ evening. Maybe you are even trying to fix a time to go out for a drink. The other person wants to suggest going for a drink this afternoon/ evening.

He/ she could choose to ask you:

¿Por qué no vamos tomar algo esta tarde?

There are many answers to this question. However, in choosing your answer, you need only be concerned about what you want to say on the subject of going for a drink this afternoon/ evening. Perhaps you want to choose between saying that:

• You could go for a drink this afternoon/ evening.
• You cannot go this afternoon/ evening, because you are busy.

Here are a couple of examples which deal with those two basic possibilities:

• Sí, claro que podemos ir a tomar algo esta tarde (yes, of course we can we can go for a drink this afternoon/ evening)
• No, esta tarde no puedo, estoy muy ocupado (no, this afternoon/ evening I can't, I am very busy)
