Where Is Your Dictionary?

SCENARIO

Maybe you are in a classroom or office environment. Perhaps you have a dictionary you usually share with colleagues. One of them is looking for you dictionary but cannot find it. That person decides to ask you where it is.

He/ she could choose to be less formal and ask you:
¿Dónde está tu diccionario?

Alternatively, he/ she could choose to be a little bit more formal and say:
¿Dónde está su diccionario?

OUR TIP

You DO NOT need be concerned about the degree of formality in the question you are asked. Whether the other person uses the more/ less formal question is irrelevant to your choice of answer. Your answer depends only on what you want to say. There are many different ways in which you could answer this question. Perhaps you want to choose between saying:
  • No sé donde está (I don't know where it is)
  • Está encima de la mesa (it is on the table)
  • Está en el suelo (it is on the floor)
  • Está en el cajón (it is on the drawer)

Now you should practice answering the question:
¿Dónde está tu diccionario?
