Who Is Talking?

Introduction

This deals with handling telephone calls, and in particular identifying yourself to a caller.





SCENARIO

Imagine you call someone on the phone. Having exchanged the customary greetings, the other person says : "who is speaking?"

In Spanish, the other person could say:

¿Con quién hablo?

OUR TIP

Responding should be quite straightforward. However, before you reply, you should decide how you are going to refer to yourself^*.

If you are a female (name, Mary Brown) and you want to refer to yourself in an informal manner, you could say:

• Con Mary Brown (Mary Brown);
• Con Mary (Mary);

Notes

* NB See examples of replies if you were a:

• A male and were referring to yourself in an informal manner
• A male and were referring to yourself in a formal manner
• A female and were referring to yourself in a formal manner

Now you should practise answering the question:

¿Con quién hablo?
