Today's WOTD is: "alcalde" = mayor

In Spanish, “alcalde*” is a masculine noun of Arabic origin, the main meaning of which is mayor, as in:
  • El alcalde expresó su apoyo a los afectados por las inundaciones (the mayor expressed his support to those affected by the floods);

*NB Please note that “alcaldesa” is the word for mayoress.

A related word is the feminine noun “alcaldía”, which is often used to refer to the:
  • Post of mayor
  • Mayor's office
  • Term of office of a mayor

Some expressions with the word “alcalde” are:
  • Alcalde en funciones (acting mayor);
  • El alcalde de Zalamea (The Mayor of Zalamea -play by Pedro Calderón de la Barca);
  • El mejor alcalde, el rey (The Best Judge, the King -play by Felix Lope de Vega);
