Motor


Today's WOTD is: "motor" = engine

In Spanish, the noun "motor" is a masculine noun of Latin origin, the meaning of which is engine or driving force.

In Spanish, the word “motor” may also be used as a describing word/ adjective. As an adjective, “motor”* describes things capable of causing motion and it is often coupled with the prefixes such as “auto” or “electro” (see expressions and examples below).

Some commonly used expressions containing the word "motor" are:
  • Vehículo automotor (motor/ car/ automobile);
  • Calentar motores (warm up engines);
  • Fuerza electromotriz (electromotive/ driving force);
  • Motor a reacción (jet engine);
  • Motor de agua (water engine);
  • Motor de arranque (starter motor);
  • Motor de combustión interna (internal combustion engine);
  • Motor de explosión (internal combustion engine);
  • Motor de inyección (fuel-injected engine);
  • Motor de propulsión a chorro (jet engine);
  • Motor de diesel (diesel engine);
  • Motor de gasolina (petrol engine);
  • Motor eléctrico (electric engine);
  • Motor en estrella (radial engine);
  • Motor fuera borda (outboard engine);
  • Motor hidráulico (hydraulic engine);

Some examples of the use of the word "motor" are:
  • Prohibida la entrada de vehículos automotores (no entry to motor vehicles).
  • Los pilotos comenzaron a calentar motores (pilots/ racing drivers began warming up engines);
  • En la clase de físca revisamos el tema de la fuerza electromtriz (in the physics class we revised the topic of electromotive force);
  • Un avión con motor a reacción (a jet-engined aeroplane);
  • Un avión con motor de propulsión a chorro (a jet-engined aeroplane);
  • Tenemos un problema con el motor de arranque (we have a problem with the starter motor);
  • El motor de agua sería un gran invento (the water engine would be a great invention);
  • El motor de combustión interna se usa mucho en los automóviles de turismo (the internal combustion engine is very common in small automobiles);
  • El motor de explosión se usa mucho en los automóviles de turismo (the internal combustion engine is very common in small automobiles);
  • El motor de diesel se usa mucho en los automóviles de turismo (the diesel engine is very common in small automobiles);
  • El motor de gasolina se usa mucho en los automóviles de turismo (the petrol engine is very common in small automobiles);
  • Este es el modelo con motor de inyección (this is the model with fuel-injected engine);
  • Este es un modelo de motor en estrella (this is a radial engine model);
  • El bote va equipado con motor fuera borda (the dinghy is equipped with an outboard engine);
  • Este es un modelo de motor hidráulico (this is a hydraulic engine model);
*NB When used as an adjective, the feminine form of “motor” is, “motriz”. This is particularly the case when used to describe forces in physics or motor/ neuron physiological functions.
